The World

The World Islands are a collection of man-made islands shaped into the continents of the world, located off the coast of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. It will consist of 300 small private artificial islands divided into four categories - private homes, estate homes, dream resorts, and community islands. Each island will range from 250,000 to 900,000 square feet (23,226 to 83,613 square meters) in size, with 50 to 100 meters (164 to 328 feet) of water between each island. It will cover a total area of 9 kilometers (5.4 miles) in length and 6 kilometers (3.6 miles) in width, surrounded by an oval shaped breakwater.

To ensure the island ambience is maximized restrictions have been placed on the height of developments. A series of waterways, canals and lakes have also been integrated into the overall design. Considered a first of its kind, this development is expected to cater specifically to the elite residential and tourist market.

Access to the island will be entirely by marine or air transport only - there will be no road access. To protect the development, two types of breakwater will be built to surround it; these include an above water revetment and a submerged reef.

The World Islands will be located 4 kilometers off the shore of Jumeirah, close to the Palm Jumeirah, between Burj Al Arab and Port Rashid at approximately 25°13 North and 55°10 East. Each island will be sold to selected private developers and are expected to have pricing beginning at AED 25 million (US$ 6.85 million), for the AED 6.6 billion (US$ 1.8 billion) project. Individuals who have purchased islands in the World Islands include Sir Richard Branson (Great Britain).

Dubai over the last few years has become the living embodiment of innovation, ambition and forward thinking. Much of this is down to Sheikh Mohammed's influence and unshakable desire to create a contemporary role for his country as a major world centre for business, tourism and as a model of multi-cultural living.

According to studies, tourism to Dubai is growing exponentially, with the current number of visitors standing at 5 million due to reach 10 million by 2007, and an incredible 40 million by 2015.

This is a freehold development including the gardens around the villas. A 3 year renewable visa is available, subject to usual Dubai Government approval.

The islands will be handed over to the private developers in the middle of 2008. Construction is expected to be completed on Orenburg and Rostov by the end of 2009. Before hand-over, the developer will carry out piling and island stabilization after which the islands will be left for 12 months before any surface construction commences.
